Licensing & Permits

Certain types of businesses require licenses and certain activities may require permits and/or have zoning considerations.

Licenses

The Ohio Business Gateway, Licensing and Permits provides information on the types of businesses and professions that may require licensing. Certain professions require a license through the state. Check the Ohio Business Gateway website for more information.

The City of Franklin issues two permits which are required for all businesses located within the City:

1. Safety Occupancy Permit
All commercial or industrial buildings located within the City shall make application to the Division of Fire for a safety occupancy permit.  Applications can be submitted to Amber Copenhaver at acopenhaver@franklinohio.org or in person at 1 Benjamin Franklin Way, Franklin, Ohio 45005
If you are building or renovating physical structures, permits are required.
You can also view our applications HERE. If you are unsure if you need a permit, this guide may help, or you can call our staff at 937-746-9921.

2. Certificate of Zoning Compliance
Businesses, including home-based businesses, are subject to zoning restrictions. A Certificate of Zoning Compliance, issued by the City of Franklin Zoning Official, is required. Contact Amber Copenhaver at 937-746-9921 to obtain this certificate.
